The sons of Somebeachsomewhere and of course the legendary Somebeachsomewhere himself have taken juvenile racing to a new level in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. Now the time has come for the brilliant Australian-bred son of Somebeachsomewhere - Poster Boy - to add his name to the imposing list of successful siring sons of Somebeachsomewhere. He was foaled in Victoria in 2014 but both his sire and dam were foaled in North America. There is little or no doubt that had he raced in North America, then Poster Boy would have a 1:47 or better record and upwards of $1 million in earnings with the rich races available to two- and three-year olds in North America.
Poster Boy was the complete racehorse on tracks in Victoria and Menangle in NSW, displaying push-button speed from day one. His race career resume paints a picture of rare quality - 30 starts, 22 wins and seven placings for earnings of $803,310. He was retired to stud perfectly sound following the decision to abandon the 2020 Inter Dominion Series at Menangle in December of that year. One could argue that Poster Boy’s breeding is also of rare quality. His sire Somebeachsomewhere is a superstar in every sense of the word and his dam is a daughter of the greatest broodmare sire in the history of harness racing - Artsplace. Aston Villa was voted the Australian Broodmare of the Year in 2019.
Poster Boy was given his name because of his 'Hollywood' handsome looks and that seems to be something he is passing onto his progeny. There are 73 foals from his first crop which are now yearlings. His first yearling to be presented in an auction ring in Australia was sold for $31,000 at the recent APG sale conducted on the Gold Coast. He will now be represented by five yearlings at the Nutrien Sydney Sale on Miracle Mile weekend. There are catalogued three colts and two fillies which are all Vicbred and Bathurst Gold Crown eligible, with four of the five also NSW Breeders Challenge Eligible. Here is a short summary of those five Poster Boy yearlings in catalogue order (click the lot to visit the pedigree page):
Lot 26 - Filly from Burn Back (Safely Kept)
There are no weak links in the pedigree of this filly with her first three dams being sired by champion stallions in Safely Kept, Whats Next and Lordship. It is also a family that can produce Stakes-type females such as Casey Otara, Flyawayhome, Flojos Gold, Jasper Jo and Madison Louise - always a good sign when shopping for a yearling filly.<
Lot 40 - Filly from Deldecree (Mach Three)
An interestingly bred filly with a 2 X 3 cross to Mach Three and 4 X 4 to Abercrombie so she should inherit a ton of speed and soundness and durability from those two stallions respectively. It is a family that churns out juvenile and three-year-old Stakes performers like Courage To Rule (1:51.1), Make The Rules (1:51.6), Western Rockstar (1:50.2) and Starship (TT1:54.5).
Lot 57 - Colt from Frankincense (Betterthancheddar)
A first foal and a first colt from an eight-times winning mare so that immediately says there is a lot to like about this almost Christmas day-born lad. The fact that he is from a mare by a son of Bettors Delight is another positive about his pedigree . Somebeachsomewhere and his sons have had some massive success over Bettors Delight mares. Now take a look at this pedigree page for Lot 57 and you will see the best horse on the page is sired by Somebeachsomewhere - another good clue for adding this colt on the shopping list.
Lot 74 - Colt from Highview Aria (In The Pocket)
When you see a double cross of Artsplace blood in a pedigree it should send a signal of potential Group One success. In the 2021 season there were six individual Group One winners in Australia with double crosses of Artsplace blood including Expensive Ego, Spirit of St Louis, Tough Tilly, Tricky Miki and that impressive list will continue to grow. This colt also has a double dose of Direct Scooter blood, a recipe for speed .
Lot 189 - Colt from Rockin Diva (Rocknroll Hanover)
A colt with champion sires through his pedigree - his first four dams are by Rocknroll Hanover, Presidential Ball, Thor Hanover and Aachen. This colt also has the right cross of blood to find the winners circle in a Stakes race. Somebeachsomewhere has had incredible success going back over the Western Hanover/Western Ideal sireline mares. This colt, with a little bit of flashiness about him, looks a ready-made juvenile type.
It may be better to be racing a Poster Boy youngster in 2024 than racing against one, so the Nutrien Sale at Warwick Farm on 5th March will be a great place to take one home.
